Melburnians endured the heat and bushfire smoke today to protest against the five-year imprisonment without charge or trial of David Hicks.
Memo to the Australian and US governments - if you're fighting against people who want to take away our freedoms, your motives are hard to have faith in if you fight the battle by taking away our freedoms.
Even the worst criminals deserve a fair trial. It's an essential right in a country that values democracy, freedom and the rule of law. Remember those concepts? Our founding fathers found them quite important. Some of us still do.
